Niche Site Experiment 03 – How To Do A Competitor Analysis

Now that I have selected a niche and that my keyword research shows that it meets my requirement of 50,000 or more monthly traffic searches, it’s time to analyze my competition.

Note: I want to reiterate that my criteria for searches doesn’t have to be on a single keyword , this can be added up with similar phrases. See what I mean here.

Going back now to competitor analysis , this is as important, if not, more important than my keyword research.

Since my goal for my niche site/s is to rank for the top spot in Google for my keyword/s, competitor analysis definition is knowing if there are websites out there targeting the same keyword as mine that is unbeatable.

RankXL Niche Site Course define unbeatable websites as “a search results page with government pages, official company sites, and organizations.

These are pages that will NEVER be beaten. They’re just the most relevant search for the keyword you chose. End of story.”

A good example will be “If you love the military and jets, something like Air Force training might seem like an awesome niche that you’ll enjoy writing about everyday.

Unfortunately, the Air Force and Military’s official pages will never be beaten no matter how many powerful links you build to your page.

Long-tail keywords are going to be dominated by these official sites as well.”

Now that we have clear understanding on what I am trying to achieve here, I am going to start with competitor analysis.

One of the competitor analysis tools that I will be using is SEOQuake. This plugin/ chrome extension  allows you to determine straightaway just at a glance what the PR of each site is.

So, when I do a search with one of my main keyword “stock market today”, here is what the results will look like if you have Seoquake installed.

It give me a quick glance of the page rank of the websites ranking for this keyword are.

But, the competitor websites page rank will not be my deciding factor on whether they will be unbeatable or not.

I will still analyze this websites using Open Site Explorer.

I will be analyzing the page metrics and not the domain metrics using this tool.

Why page metric?

Because Google’s results are full of high domain authority sites now, basing my research on domain metrics will prevent me from ever finding a good keyword worth pursuing.

What I am trying to look for is the strength of the actual page that’s ranking.

Doing a keyword search using ” stock market today” brings http://money.cnn.com , at the no. 1 position.

If I check MOZ how powerful that domain is, this is what the results is;

That is some pretty insane result, something that would make you think to back out and don’t try to rank with that keyword.

But before we do that let try to check the actual page that is ranking

Still pretty amazing result, but when we look at the actual page that is ranking , this is what the contents are

It’s just some 50 -100 words and just showing what the market are currently doing, I can easily blow their content out of the water with what I will create.

I did the same analysis with the other page that is in Google first page, and found that either they don’t have enough content or by the page rank itself ( page rank 0 for the no. 3 position). This makes me decide to pursue on my selected niche and keywords.
